Strong leadership ahead: Brimbank elects Virginia Tachos as Mayor

27 November, 2025

Cr Virginia Tachos has been elected Mayor of Brimbank for the next 12 months, following a vote by fellow Councillors at the 25 November 2025 Council Meeting, which was livestreamed to the public.

This is her first term as Mayor. Cr Tachos was first elected to Council in 2016 and is now serving her third term.

She said she was humbled and grateful for the role, thanking residents, supporters and Councillors for their confidence. “I’m truly honoured to serve as Mayor of Brimbank and to represent our vibrant, diverse and resilient community.”

Mayor Tachos acknowledged outgoing Mayor Thuy Dang and outgoing Deputy Mayor Victoria Borg, and reaffirmed her commitment to collaborative leadership with Councillors, CEO Fiona Blair and the Executive Team.

Reflecting on her personal journey, she spoke of being shaped by her working-class migrant upbringing and the influence of her late father, a unionist who inspired her commitment to standing up for unheard voices. Her experience raising a family in the west and working across the corporate, not-for-profit and disability sectors has deepened her dedication to the Brimbank community.

“Brimbank is entering an energising new chapter, and I’m committed to creating a more liveable, inclusive and opportunity-ready city. I will work tirelessly to represent and advocate for our community,” she said.

Cr Maria Kerr was elected Deputy Mayor for the first time.

Council recently adopted the We Are Brimbank Council Plan 2025–2029, outlining a roadmap for a proud, thriving and connected city. Key advocacy priorities include urgent delivery of the Sunshine Station Masterplan, stronger action on homelessness, and seeking state management and duplication of Taylors Road west of Kings Road to improve safety and traffic flow.
